Applications are invited from registered Medical Practitioners for this post in the Department of Old Age Psychiatry in Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust. Applicants who don’t possess MRCPsych (UK) are welcome to apply

The post would suit an individual aiming to pursue a career in Old Age Psychiatry who wishes to develop an interest in teaching. The successful candidate will be involved in co-ordinating and providing the undergraduate clinical teaching programme (5 sessions per week per annual average) and will undertake 5 sessions of clinical duties and professional development. The main clinical duties include the support of inpatients and there will also be the opportunity to carry out some outpatient work and home visits.

There are no on-call commitments to the post, but locum opportunities may be available.

Ideally the successful candidate will have completed Foundation Training (or the equivalent) as well as Core Psychiatry training. Specialty doctors are also encouraged to apply.

This post is ideal for individuals with are studying towards their CASC exam, or someone who have already achieved this qualification.

The successful applicant will have the option of being sponsored to study for the Certificate in Medical Education or, if in possession of the Certificate already, may wish to pursue the Diploma in Medical Education. This should be completed during the year of their employment within the Trust and is subject to a financial cap (an international student may need to personally fund this further).

The post will be available from 2 August 2023 for a period of 12 months and will be based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead.

The Trust has recently been recognised by Health Education England for the quality of training provided to both our undergraduate and foundation students. Gateshead offers a specialist service for Old Age Psychiatry to individuals over 65 years who suffer from organic psychiatric disorders, the majority of younger people suffering from dementia and the majority of the functionally ill elderly. Old Age Psychiatry Services are divided into five community sectors based on GP practices, Dr Ntanda’s and Professor Thomas cover the east of Gateshead, Dr Anitha Howard, and Dr Pannikar cover the west of Gateshead, and Dr Osman and Dr Harrison cover the central sector.

Dr Paul Donaghue works within the memory hub and Woodside Young Onset Dementia Service. Facilities are based in two sites at the Queen Elizabeth hospital - Cragside ( an organic psychiatry ward) and Sunniside (a functional psychiatry ward). Bensham hospital has the memory hub and Woodside day hospital for (our young onset dementia patients).

The Clinical Teaching Fellow will work alongside Dr Ntanda , together with a multi-disciplinary team. There are two trainees in Old Age Psychiatry, one a GP Registrar and one an F2. Cross cover arrangements exist between the CT, GPR and F2. In addition there are two Higher Trainee positions and five other sector consultants (Dr K Franks, Dr R Harrison and Professor Thomas, Dr Pannikar, Dr Howard). A sixth consultant Old Age Psychiatrist provides Liaison Old Age Psychiatry Services.

The Old Age Psychiatry Service has close working and educational links with General Psychiatry in Gateshead. There are five further Junior Trainees in General Psychiatry (2 CTs, 2 GPRs and an F2), two Higher Trainees and nine Consultants.
